The continuing uncertainty around the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic has prompted the cancellation of yet another state senior games. Mike Thornton, state coordinator for the Idaho State Games, made the announcement on Saturday, May 23, 2020 in an email to athletes, shown here in its entirety:
“It is my unwelcome duty to inform everyone that our board has found it necessary to cancel the 2020 Idaho Senior Games.
We have been monitoring the status of the Covid-19 virus since we realized it would become an issue for us earlier this spring. Now, even though our events are not scheduled until August, and the states are beginning to “open up”, there are high levels of risk and uncertainty which would make a decision to proceed nothing but irresponsible.
We must protect the health and well-being of our athletes. To begin with, most of us are in that designated “high risk” group of older Americans. In addition, after considering the individual events it is apparent that “social distancing” protocols would be impractical, if not impossible. There is also the issue of venues. We are dependent on cities and parks departments who are not yet in a position to make commitments about facility use.
It is unfortunate that our 2020 games were to be a qualifying year for the next national event to be held in Florida in November of 2021. The National Senior Games has released a guide called “2021 Adjusted Qualification” which will allow athletes who had qualified for nationals in 2017 and 2019 to automatically qualify for 2021. They have also created an “open” category for athletes who have not had the opportunity to compete in qualifying events. The details of this revised qualifying policy can be found on the NSGA website, or click here.
We honor the hard work and dedication of our athletes, event coordinators, sponsors and board of directors who make our annual event a success. We deeply regret our decision to cancel the 2020 games but we assure you that we’ll be back in August of 2021!
Please stay safe, continue to follow a healthy, active lifestyle and maintain your social distance!”
